Caregivers Talk About Liver Protection For Seniors

Mar 9, 2018 by Tammara LaCasse

The liver is an important part of our bodies and it is an organ that you do not want to fail on you. The liver is able to regenerate itself, even once it has been damaged or it has undergone some type of surgery. Unfortunately, while the liver is very resilient, caregivers warn that it is not invincible, and it can succumb to too much damage. In fact, two of the leading causes for liver failure include alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis.

Below, our team of caregivers will provide you with some liver protection tips that you can pass on to your loved one or you can assist them in doing. It is important that your loved one take steps to protect their liver, as it can quickly become damaged and your loved one may then suffer from liver failure.

Here are some tips to protect the liver from our caregivers:

  • Monitor how much acetaminophen your loved one consumes
  • Encourage your loved one to stop drinking
  • Take a look at all medications that your loved one takes and ensure that they do not cause liver damage
  • Always discuss with your loved one’s physician whether or not a new supplement is a good idea
  • Make sure that your loved one is cautious when using chemicals in his or her home and see to it that those chemicals do not cause liver damage
  • Encourage your loved one to drink more coffee
  • Monitor your loved one’s diet and make sure it is balanced with lean protein, healthy fats, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Have your loved one tested for viral hepatitis

Your loved one’s liver health is important, and you should work with him or her to make sure that they take the above steps to protect this vital organ. If you would like to learn more about how our caregivers can assist your loved one, contact Comfort Keepers today.
